Hello! We are Pat & Jenny Daniels, a small family-oriented breeder located in beautiful Big Lake, Alaska, which is located in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley in Southcentral Alaska.
We have dedicated ourselves to producing outstanding quality health tested Golden Retrievers that are well socialized and will provide a lifetime of companionship to their new families. We first became familiar with the breed as pet owners, when we purchased our first Golden puppy that was to become a companion for our family. Little did we know at the time how our love for the breed would continue to grow into what has now become an intimate passion for us since 2009! Since then we have carefully added selective Goldens to our family from reputable breeders all over the world!
Our puppies are born in our home and while we stand back and allow Mama to do her thing, we are close by to lend support if need be. These little guys are handled, loved and nurtured daily by our family. They are well socialized with the everyday living sounds as well as with our other dogs and even our cat, Leo and horse, Charlie! They are introduced to a number of sights, sounds and smells while they are in our care.
Our puppies are the result of careful and selective breeding practices providing beautiful puppies bred for temperament, breed type and most of all to produce wonderful companions and family members. While placing puppies into loving homes is first and foremost, maintaining and achieving a quality of excellence is our ultimate goal. Our Goldens are loved and respected members of our family, each puppy bred is nurtured, cared for and loved until the day they go home with their new family.
A little more about us ... We moved to Alaska from Reno, Nevada in 2009. The beauty of this place is unsurpassed like nothing you've ever seen. We love the outdoors whether that be camping, boating, hiking, horseback riding, gardening, fishing, hunting, snowmaching (Pat's raced the infamous 2000 mile Iron Dog race twice!) and of course swimming the dogs!
Our dogs are our life. First and foremost they are treasured members of our family and live in our home with us and somewhere along the way we became "that" family where it's normal to have a 80lb Golden sitting in our lap on the couch!?
They get a ton of exercise and play on our rural property in Big Lake, AK. We live within a ¼ mile o

They get a ton of exercise and play on our rural property in Big Lake, AK. We live within a ¼ mile of a very private lake which is fortunate because they LOVE everything about the water! We all go on lots of adventures, such as snow-machines in the winter wonderland, ATV rides in the land of the midnight sun, hiking, camping, fishing, boating, horseback riding, etc. They are a happy, healthy bunch of Golden Retrievers and love the looks (along with LOTS of “oooh’s and ahhhh’s!) we are out with our “herd”!
As with every litter we are always increasing our knowledge for the betterment of the breed and to produce quality puppies, I also am constantly striving to take on new challenges and learn new stuff to help better our own dogs lives. Two years ago I switched over all of our dogs from feeding a kibble based diet to a raw and meaty bones diet (or commonly known as the 'BARF' diet) which they have all thrived on and I personally love knowing that I am feeding them food that has not been over processed. I am currently working on getting certified by Dogs Naturally University in Raw Dog Food Nutrition, Pet Food Nutrition and Acute Canine Herbalism in order to better my knowledge and help others in the process as well.
Due to our harsh Alaskan winters, we have always believed in having a neutral inviting space for all of our puppy clients to be able to come and hang out with the puppies, where it wasn’t necessarily a temporary setup in our house. Due to our harsh Alaskan winters, we have always believed in having a neutral inviting space for all of our puppy clients to be able to come and hang out with the puppies, where it wasn’t necessarily a temporary setup in our house. And as the puppies get older they too need a larger space to play and be puppies that is also out of the elements.
Every litter, the idea of this space has evolved a little more, and finally in 2017, (with much thanks to all of my husband’s hard work!) we created the official Birchwood Goldens Puppy Facility! It has a wonderful safe playpen for the puppies to be in when they are not with us or in the play room, that is more than spacious for them all to stretch out and have some room to do some serious napping! There is a kitchenette where we prepare all of the meals for the puppies as well as the adult dogs. The play room is a large 10 x 12 room filled with toys, tunnels, a ball pit, etc. all to provide lots of stimulation for the puppies.
Once we are ready for visitors, we invite all puppy clients to come and spend time with the puppies and enjoy this space. Most puppy visits start at about 6 weeks of age. , after their first round of shots. We understand that some people may not understand why we make everyone wait until after this time-frame, but it has been our standard practice since day 1 and it’s entirely to protect the puppies until they’ve had their first shots. Puppies will naturally get some immunity protection from their mother at birth, so this is just an extra precaution that we have chosen to take (as not every breeder does it this way).
However all that being said, we do understand the excitement of wanting to meet your new puppy as soon as possible, so we do weekly Facebook Live events for everyone to tune in and see the pups live. During these events, I’ll talk about the pups in general, answer questions, go over what if anything happened that week, what development stage they are currently in and report each of their weights. It’s proven to be a pretty fun way for our puppy clients to get to see the pups grow each week and get to know them better.
Don't miss our Friday night Facebook Live events! After the puppies are born, we will host a Facebook Live event every Friday at 6:00 pm Alaska Standard Time for everyone to tune in and see the puppies!
